Why We Exist

Our mission is to provide unparalleled specialty and emergency veterinary care while educating and empowering the next generation of veterinary professionals. With compassion and a commitment to excellence, we support the special bond between pets and their people in the Southern New England community.

In 2000, a husband and wife team founded Ocean State Veterinary Specialists (OSVS) in Rhode Island, with the vision of creating a top-flight private referral and emergency clinic capable of providing university-level care. Within a few years, it became evident that the region of Rhode Island and Massachusetts east of Narragansett Bay did not have ready access to the emergency and specialty services we were delivering. Bay State Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Services provides excellent emergency care, internal medicine and surgery services, and the doctors have access to the facilities at OSVS if advanced diagnostics are needed. The exceptional group of doctors, nurses and support staff are not only great at their job but are also genuine animal lovers. Although we are a for-profit business, our guiding principle has and will always be, we do what is best for your pet. To honor this mission, we have created a fee structure substantially less expensive than similar referral and emergency hospitals in the Northeast so that as many pets as possible can take advantage of the expertise, technology and 24-hour care that we provide.

The doctors practicing at BSVESS are strong supporters of using Evidence-based veterinary medicine (EBVM). Practicing EBVM is critical because it ensures that the treatments and care veterinarians provide are based on the best available scientific research, combined with their clinical experience and the needs of each animal. This approach helps veterinarians make the most effective decisions for a pet’s health, leading to better outcomes, fewer unnecessary treatments, and a more efficient use of clients’ resources. By using evidence-based methods, pet owners can feel confident that their animals are receiving the most up-to-date and proven care.
