The surgeon at BSVESS, Dr. Faulkner Besancon, is board certified by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS). The surgery service offers a broad range of procedures from life-saving emergency surgeries to extensive orthopedic repairs and delicate soft tissue procedures. Through advanced continuing education and extensive professional affiliations, Dr. Besancon keeps abreast of the latest advances in surgical techniques and peri-operative care. He also has access to some of the advanced diagnostics at our sister hospital in Rhode Island (OSVS) and often collaborates with the surgical team at that facility.

Thorough pre-operative evaluation, including an in-depth evaluation and the opportunity for consultation with the in-house specialists or the large specialty team at OSVS, ensures that every patient has a unique treatment plan to ensure the best possible outcome.
Soft Tissue Surgery
The board-certified surgeon at BSVESS Veterinary Specialists have completed advanced continuing education in order to remain abreast of the latest advances in soft-tissue surgical techniques and peri-operative care. We work cooperatively with your primary care veterinarian to assess and treat a wide variety of soft-tissue conditions.
Soft tissue surgical procedures performed at BSVESS include, but are not limited to:
- Upper airway surgery- Brachycephalic syndrome, laryngeal paralysis, tracheostomy, tumor removal, trauma repair, tracheal stenting procedures
- Abdominal surgery- Gastric dilatation and volvulus repair, bloat, gastrointestinal obstruction (foreign body retrieval), intra-abdominal tumor removal, hernia repair, portosystemic shunt attenuation, bladder stone removal, urethrostomy, stenting procedures, cholecystectomy (gall bladder removal), peritonitis management
- Thoracic surgery- Cardiovascular problems including patent ductus arteriosus ligation, lung tumor removal, abscess drainage/removal, trauma repair, lung lobe torsion removal
- Surgery of the skin (tumor removal, management of dermatologic problems) and wound reconstruction (including skin flaps and skin grafts)
- Ear surgery.

The staff of BSVESS consists of highly trained technicians and emergency doctors 24 hours per day. Moment-by-moment monitoring of post-operative patients allows us to provide early recognition of pain or complications. The sooner issues are identified and receive treatment, the easier they are resolved and the less likely that they will develop into anything more complicated. The first evening after a surgery is an important one for post-operative patients. Constant nursing care allows the patients to be kept clean, dry, warm, and comfortable as they continue to recover from anesthesia. They may have difficulty during this time in getting up to urinate or drink water. These pets are usually kept on a maintenance level of IV fluid therapy and are assisted in their efforts to urinate or change positions.
Because of our continuous monitoring of patients, BSVESS is able to tailor care to each pet’s specific needs and provide uninterrupted comfort and pain management. Early initiation of surgical incision care and physical therapy within the first 24 to 72 hours shortens recovery time and promotes healing.
